A Dog I Once Feared

I was so excited after my dad told me we were getting a second dog! All I knew at the time is that she was a 3 year old black and tan coonhound rescue. I cannot remember where she was but I remember the drive being quite far. When my dad and I got there my first impression of the place wasn’t great. I looked around and saw garbage everywhere and it was so dirty. I was fine with it I don’t judge but when the owners of the property took us to see our new dog my heart dropped. Jade was breed to hunt bears and other game, but when she refused to go out hunting they just put her in a small 15ft2 by 15ft2 pen. She has been confined to that cage most of her life. She wasn’t shown any love and she had only known her pen.
When we opened the gates I can remember fearing her as she were a monster. She was crazy to say the least. She was barking and jumping when she was let out. The owner used all of his strength to subdue her. She frightened me to death. This dog was massive and so strong, she could easily bite someone's finger off or take a chunk out of their arm. From there we put her into our car and I sat as far away from her as possible. It was her first time ever being in a car and she was freaking out. Which in return scared me too. It was a long ride home.
When we got home my dad didn’t hesitate to start training our new dog. He started out basic trying to get her not to jump anymore, he used a shock collar with a beeping noise as a warning. When he finished she was scared of the beeping. I was amazed how much progress he made the first day with her. Though she was far from a tame dog. She would only listen some what to my dad and would ignore anyone other than him. She had to get trained with everyone in the family for her to become tame. It took a very long and painful time, but in the end she became the sweetest and calmest dog ever. All she ever needed was a bit of love and she is the perfect dog ever.
Today she is about 6 years old and my dad now uses her as a service dog to help him walk. He doesn’t admit it, but he also uses her as a therapy dog to help him when he's in pain. Which is perfect because she is so loving and caring now. The only problem she has is that she gets very hostile around other dogs other than lady, my other dog. I believe that she is protecting my dad and sees other dogs as threats to his safety and she won’t hesitate to take any threat to him down.
