Divorce Party

What does one bring to a divorce party? Sympathy? Strippers? Vodka? Well Friday is the big day and I am responsible for hosting what should be my best friends BEST DIVORCE PARTY YET! I'm hopeful this will be her only divorce but multiple weddings never come as a shock anymore. Marriage was initially intended to be the unification of two souls FOREVER but now it seems like nothing more than a temporary contract. The words "Till death do us part" have lost their meaning just the same as marriage has lost its sanctity.
Talking to my peers it's obvious they have a clouded misconception of what a marriage is supposed to be; two people fall in love, get married, live happily ever after right? Wrong! Marriage is not something you do to make you happy it is what you do to build a family. We are lucky enough to live in a time when we are able to pick our partners but it is an advantage that we are taking for granted. Many rush to the alter with shallow thoughts because in the back of their mind divorce is always an option. Well what if divorce were illegal? What if divorce were not an option? Then people would be forced to actually get to know each other before they tied the knot.
When you get married to someone you are making a sacred vow to devote your life to them and this is a promise that should not ever be taken lightly. Puppy love and infatuation can make us blind and after jumping the broom we may discover our partner has some type of addiction, is a cheater, or worse an abuser but these are all qualities that can be seen if one truly takes the time to get to know someone. Once you have actually taken that step and married someone they are officially part of you; which means you shouldn't be able to get rid of them for any reason.
Everyone loves the honeymoon but then split as soon as a little rain comes. Perhaps if we were only allowed to be married once people would be more patient in both the selection of their partner as well as the issues that arise when married to their partner.
As for my friend I guess I can bring her an earful of advice...and vodka. Vodka makes everything better.
