How cancer saved my life...

I was un-happily going through life, making things as hard as a person can for themselves. Self destruct mode some called me! And looking back now I have to agree. The nature of this is another story, but I was about to have a rude awakening. After finding myself in the hospital, and having been there 2 weeks, it was an unacceptable shock when they said I had MRSA. Community acquired, it just didn't ring true. So after the small procedure I was sent home but found complications starting as soon as I got home. A few more days and I was back again, at a different hospital. I had been re admitted and was in a pvt room. One morning on the doctors rounds he and his colleagues came in and I was finally told the truth, it was cancer and I needed operating on fairly quickly. This at least did make sense and I accepted this very easily somehow, and had a profound affect on my life. Previously I had been addicted to alot of drugs, I was using a concoction of heroin and crack cocaine on a daily basis and had been living this life style 17 yrs. And with that one sentence telling me I had a tumor, everything changed. My addictions seemed to disapear and the cravings were soon to go..... I had a new fight on my hands. It has been 19 months now since diagnosis and in that time I went through chemo, fought my addictions, started to paint, became a volunteer with a couple of charities and am a peer mentor. Am starting Uni in a few weeks, this is truely a massive turn around and has given my life great joy. It is certainly strange how these situations can influence change from with in.
