INDIAN WOMEN TODAY

Not just today, but everyday, we need to be wanted, cherished, loved, respected, and equally importantly, acknowledged.
The man is as powerful as he is in Indian society because of all the hard work that the women in his life have put in; from his mother to his sister to his wife to his daughter. And as ours is an extended family, it also includes his aunts and cousins. We tend to forget the maid in whose secure arms we left him as a child when we went to work. A trustworthy nanny is priceless.

Flowers, chocolates and jewellery are not enough, in fact, we don’t need them, though we girls love gifts. They are just totems of commemoration which will whither with time. What we need and want is to be remembered everyday.

To our husbands, boyfriends, fathers and brothers, we are no less than any of you. We have loved you, mothered you (our husbands and boyfriends love being mothered), spoiled you and guided you. Indian society has a long way to go before it views us equally. We are a princess at home, we are not one in society. Will that day come? Perhaps. When we can change the mindset of the Indian man and, equally importantly, of the woman, who changes as she evolves with time; from an innocent girl child to a young adult, from a wife to a mother, from a homemaker to a mother-in-law. A man does not have as many roles. But she allows time to swamp her and gets lost in conditioning; double standards come to the fore. As we celebrate Women’s Day we need to remember that we girls also have to change.
