Live Wires
I call them live wires-- those who have electric reverence, memorable, exotic, alive and alluring. The zombies of the exceedingly successful. They jolt us awake from our sleepy lives and tell us that we can achieve all we can dream to be.
This is not so.
The live wires lie, liars down to bare bone. They're exhilarating, they leave us breathless, our heart pounding, like we're on the treadmill, running hot and fast towards nothing but our heart races and we feel our pulse beside our brains and the blood rushes furiously and back and forth, incredibly alert in uniformity.
We're all just acting. None of it is real, nothing in this world is sweet like candy or fresh like fruit hanging plumply, illuminated by setting sun.
Some achieve, some look into the eyes and hearts and souls of all those who pass by and are started by this, this boom shock of shared existence. I cannot channel this, most frequently I am invisible, going through the motions.
Quiver, shake, shot, shoot me, with your camera, with your gun, I couldn't care less I already feel as if I have died just sharing in your dreamy metaphors and earnest goals and I'm sorry I flutter away so easily but I am too careful to care for the world and all those who thrive in it.
It's dangerous to grapple with a live wire, even more deadly to live in accordance with a live wire. But the sparks tempt me, and I just can't seem to help myself.

superbly cynical, Gina...love the passion and articulation...was recently watching the beginning of a documentary on Warren Buffet, and lost interest after 5 minutes, and I love documentaries, it just sounded so cliche' the man still has breakfast at Mcdonalds and is on an allowance as well, and at that point I sorta kinda lost my reverence and no longer desired to be one of 'The zombies of the exceedingly successful.' I suspect most of them would be just 'folk' if not for the money their parents gave them to start. There are great success stories to inspired, no doubt, but those don't make the headlines. Maybe 'Live Wires' just want to hear shallow cliches and believe success will be handed to them instead of buying into the idea of hard work, determination and ability....your write is fascinating to read, enjoyed....cheers poetess
Part story, part polemic, part prose poem.
All consuming. Entirely compelling.
You're my favourite prose writer on this site with very good reason.
J ;)
