Me and the water

My heart pounds. I don't think I'm ready. The buzzer sounds and I dive in. Gliding through the water, I forget my fears. I swim with all my might. There is no sound. There are no people. There is no race. There's only the water and me. I hit the wall and turn around. The water feels amazing on my skin. I turn around again, losing myself in the water. I turn around one last time. I see the wall, and I reach for it. As I touch it, the buzzer sounds. In that moment, my senses return. The crowd is cheering and the last of the swimmers are splashing through the water. I hear myself gasping for air. The announcer comes over the speakers. "And the winners of the freestyle hundred meter race are the Sharks!" I look at my team as they run over to me, all of them cheering.Ā
