Mr. Fuzzybottoms

Mr. Fuzzybottoms was a very old teddy bear.  In fact he was so old that no one in the Family knew where he came from.  He certainly looked like an old toy.  He was missing his right eye and left ear.  He also had several stitches all over his fake brown fur.
Mr. Fuzzybottoms currently belonged to the youngest member of the Family, Tamara.  Tamara was a five year old girl with platinum blonde hair and big brown eyes.  Tamara had many toys, but none she loved more than Mr. Fuzzybottoms.  She played with him every chance she got  She was watching TV with Mr. Fuzzybottoms wrapped tightly in her arms when her mother, who looked remarkably like Tamara, came up to her.
“Time for bed love,”
“Aww, Do I have to?” Tamara pouted hugging the bear more tightly.
Her mom smiled and picked Tamara up, “Yes dear, you do.”  Tamara’s mom put her into bed and tucked Tamara.  Her mom kissed Tamara’s forehead, “Goodnight, my love.”
“Mr. Fuzzybottoms too!” Tamara exclaimed and held up the stuffed bear.
Tamara’s mother smiled again and kissed the small bear’s head, “Goodnight, Mr. Fuzzybottoms” Her mother flipped the light switch, leaving the night light as the only source of light.  Tamara closed her eyes and was asleep in minutes.
Darkness overtook the little girl’s room.  There was something wrong with this darkness.  It was too dark.  The night light went out and the room was thrown into total darkness.
Something from the shadows let out a low growl.  Tamara stirred in her sleep.  The growling grew louder and louder and Tamara grew more restless and started whimpering quietly.
A Nightmare came out of the shadows.
The Monster was enormous.  It had huge razor sharp teeth and claws.  Its leathery skin was so black it made the darkness around it lighter.  Its eyes were the worst.  It had bright fiery orange eyes with catlike slits for pupils.  It took a step forward.  Tamara started crying in her sleep.  But she suddenly stopped crying and became still.  Something was moving on Tamara’s bed.
Mr. Fuzzybottoms was standing at the edge of Tamara’s bed.  The Monster stopped dead and growled louder and angrier.
“Move Old Bear or I’ll destroy you with her,” the Nightmare snarled.  Mr. Fuzzybottoms said nothing but stood defiantly in front of the Monster staring at it. The Nightmare took another step forward.
Then Mr. Fuzzybottoms roared and the roar was so loud the Nightmare staggered back.  The room started to swirl and change until they were no longer in Tamara’s room.  They were on an ancient battlefield.  The ground was littered with moss covered skeletons and rusted weapons.  Mr. Fuzzybottoms was no longer a stuffed toy, he was an enormous bear.  His fur was more grey than brown.  His left ear and right eye were still gone.  His entire body was covered in scars but the worst were two scars parallel to each other that went from the top of his head over his right eye then veered off and went across his body all the way to his hindquarters.  Tamara was there but she was transparent as she was there but also wasn’t.  She was still asleep.
“The Great Old Bear,” The Nightmare sneered, “I’ll enjoy destroying this child and making you watch!”
The Great Old Bear said simply, “Try.”
The Nightmare shrieked in rage a charged the Great Bear.  The Great Bear didn’t move.   The Monster thundered toward the Bear.  Yet he still didn’t move.  The Monster had nearly reached him the Old Bear moved so fast the Nightmare didn’t see him and the Bear rammed into it.  The Monster flew backward and tumbled across the ground.  The Old Bear raked his huge claws across the Nightmare’s chest.  The Nightmare screeched in pain, then jumped, twisted in the air, and kicked the Bear in the face.  He staggered back and the Nightmare followed up by kicking the Old Bear again in the ribs.  The Great Bear tumbled along the ground.
The Nightmare lunged towards Tamara.  The Old Bear let out an enraged roar and sprinted toward the Nightmare.  He caught up to it and slashed at its heels.  The Nightmare shrieked in pain and fell to the ground.  The Great Bear fell on top of it, flipped it over, and sunk his teeth into the Monster’s throat.  The Nightmare’s eyes widened in terror as it clawed at every inch of the Bear, covering itself and the Old Bear in blood.  But the Bear held on and with a mighty wrench of his head he ripped out the Nightmare’s throat.
Silence.
The Great Old Bear stood on the ancient battlefield panting.  Suddenly he felt the pressure of presences leering at him, draining him of strength and will.  A wind blew across the battlefield and it whispered horrible things to the Old Bear.
He started to growl then he roared again.  This roar was so loud that the ground and air itself shook.  The presences fled in fear and the Bear felt the pressure disappear and the wind stopped.
“I AM THE GREAT OLD BEAR,” he roared, “AND AS I DRAW BREATH THIS CHILD AND THIS FAMILY ARE PROTECTED!”  The presences came back in the thousands but they did nothing but stare.
“YOU CAN SEND YOUR INSECTS AFTER THEM BUT I WILL KILL EVERY ONE OF THEM!  THIS I SWEAR!  THIS I PROMISE!”
The Great Old Bear turned and walked back towards Tamara.  He put his paw on her bed and almost immediately the battlefield swirled and changed back to Tamara’s bedroom.  He was no longer the Great Old Bear.  He was once again Mr. Fuzzybottoms.  He climbed back onto Tamara’s bed and put himself back her arms.
And there Mr. Fuzzybottoms stayed vigilant.
