Oogy (Character Sketch)

Oogy’s life started as a miserable one. He was only ten weeks old and weighed 20 pounds, and he was used as a bait dog. Police suspected the drug activity going on and raided the house where Oogy was found bleeding to death. If the police had not raided the home Oogy was in, he would most likely have died. The left side of his face, including most of his lower jaw, was crushed.

Even though Oogy suffered a staggering pain and numerous frightening experiences, he did not show any anxiety toward the doctor, as if he knew that these people were different from those who had controlled his life before, that they were kind.

Oogy was thought to be a pit bull at first, and finally found out to be a type of Dogo Argentino. He had evidently been involved in some sort of fighting adventure and the reflected prejudices based on all the negative things written about the breed made some people react very cruel toward Oogy. Once an elderly female neighbor asked what happen to Oogy because of his appearance, a one eared dog. As soon as she was told that the dog was used as a bait dog for a fighting dog, she said dismissively, “I hate pit bulls.” (Page,111 in the book)

Not only Oogy but there are lots of brutalized animals in the world that we can’t imagine. For example, Greyhound dog. Greyhound racing dog is controlled by gambling and money. Greyhound is not considered as a living animal, but rather a running machine.  Any dog that are injured or have problems is killed. If they win races they will live. Very few dogs make it to 4 years.

Because of Oogy’s lovable, obedient, humorous characteristics, he was adopted by a dog-loving family. In spite of many difficult operations Oogy had to overcome, he was strong and the family had deep affection for him. At the same time, the family learned many precious and meaningful experiences through Oogy. Oogy was a sign of encouragement for the family. Inevitably everyone has to go through an horrible things in their lives that one can’t escape. Oogy was a living proof of showing great changes in his life.

Even though Oogy had a horrible time at the beginning, he was able to receive the kindness of human beings for the first time in his life. I should not forget about the other brutalized animals, normal animals in the world, and to respect my dog from now on.
