Sky Inked Sea

Sky Inked Sea

As I sit in the old rocking chair I watch the pink leaves on the old maple tree sway with a soft brush that was born from a breeze.

I listen to their sweet gentle sound that reminds me of the waves rolling in the sea that I would stare off into as I sat in the warm sand trembling in my skin.

I listen and I wait for her, my love, my sweet, I wait but she has yet to call for me the way she did many years ago. She called to me. She called to me that day at the sea calling, "Come to me my darling! Come like the small waves that always rise from the sky inked sea to touch my toes, cold toes, or will you run back to the old maple tree that sways with a soft brush that was born from a breeze?

She ran, she ran into the sea calling to me, calling, calling but I could not chase after her. My toes, warm toes, just a foot from an endless black sea with its arms crawling closer to me hoping it can take me under to a world of darkness.

But she only kept calling for me, calling, calling, calling until her calls became cry's and her cry's into screams. I wanted to grab her, to hold her tight in my arms so that never again would she doubt my love for her but she was a million galaxy's away it seemed. It was too far to reach her on my own and as I called for help I heard her scream, "My darling! A coward? You choose the safety of the  summer maple leaves over my blue ruby heart! Goodbye to the one I had called my love! Goodbye!"

My tears were salty and hot  as the fell off my sun burned cheeks and I screamed out to her but all I could hear was the ocean waves hitting the the shore.

She had left me, she had left me that day with a heart full of dread, she had left me broken in the warm soft sand but it was I who had left her for dead.

Grief was enthralling within me and launched me out of the splintered rocking chair with my heart and mind beating like a drum pounding, pounding, as I stared out at my summer field. I called to her. I called and I called until my calls became cry's and my cry's into screams but I knew she would never return to me.

Time pasted and I was left almost silent. All that was left were soft sorrowful chokes that I couldn't help but make and slowly I found myself staring deeply into the summer day and not seeing the same pink maple tree sway. Its leaves were black and dead and its branches were a dark bloody red, peeling and tarring, falling and barring the tree. I almost fell to my knees as my eyes went wide when I found myself listening to the tree call for me, "My, my, deary you look so shaken by the fact that it's your fault she will never be waken!"  I began to tremble and stutter as the trees darkness started to consume the sky and it treacherous calls turned into cry's, "My,my, darling why you acting so brave it wasn't like that when it came to the summer waves!" This must be a joke or at the very least a dream I said to myself as I ran leaving behind the words of its screams "My, my, love with this you must be smart. Stay with me love and forget her blue ruby heart!" I ran and I ran till I could run no more. My strength gave out and I fell to the floor legs bright red and sore. My tears burned like hot fire down my cheeks and I saw what ground I had fallen on and my limbs went weak. My knees and hands were touching the tan sand that stretched for miles and miles. That's when I knew where I must be as I stared out ever so deeply into the sky inked sea.

It was the sea that had taken everything from me. My heart is racing, racing, pounding, pounding but then I felt a cold but gentle touch. It was was the touch the my darling had loved so much. The touch of a small shore wave that was there only for a moment then quickly went away.  My heart and mind became still and my tears no long fogged my eyes. I sat and waited there only in pure and utter surprise.

My dearest, my darling, my love, you're the only thing I need. Without you I am nothing but an empty shell broken and scratched never to be complete. Everyday it seems I'm sinking deeper into the world of darkness that I knew was slowly driving me mad but yet I refused to swim because I was a cowardfull man but now I have the strength to reach the surface and save you the way I should have done many years ago. So let me be by your side again because you, my blue ruby heart queen, are mine and I am your and yours I will forever be.

And it was that day I left knowing there would be no return but I only ran faster calling for her, calling, calling.

Finally we can lie safely together in a sea of pink maple leaves that would gently kiss your rosey cheeks with a soft brush that was born from an ocean breeze.

Love is a dangerous thing. It can make us act strange and make us do crazy things but sometimes we let our fears control us and keep us from living happily with our partners, we let our fears draw the line of how far we are willing to go which leaves all of its victims with regret. To overcome what scares you the most to protect someone you care the most about is probably the most heroic and bravest thing to do but most certainly the hardest. This poem/ short story  is probably one of the ones I took the most time on because I wanted to really just take my time and try to make the readers   understand the protagonist and how their grief of losing the most important thing in his life slowly brings him to madness and makes him see the place he thought was the safest actually kept him from saving his lover and soon learns the beauty of his fear and embraces it so he can be with his love once more.
