The Guardian Angel

The Angel.

He sat high up on the edge of a high-rise building, on one of its corners. It was early morning, and the sun was not quite up yet. He sat and looked at the city from his high vantage point. The city-buildings were silhouetted in grey and gold in the morning sunlight.

The streets and side-walks were still empty, and only occasionally a pedestrian or car would pass below. But slowly, as the dawn broke, more people emerged and they started to mill around in the streets. Newspaper vendors were already selling the morning edition on the corners, calling the headlines out loudly to passing pedestrians and motorists.

He sat and watched them from on high, occupied with his own thoughts while he did so. He could see them all, and touch their thoughts, fears and dreams with his mind. They in turn could not see him at all. To them he was invisible. He sat silently in the wind, and read their lives from above.

The early morning traffic started to pick up at around seven o’ clock, and now the streets and side-walks were bustling with people in a hurry to get to work, or their various destinations. Car horns honked on and off in the heavy traffic, as motorist negotiated their way through the streets. People talked loudly on the pavements, and thronged in groups or as individuals through the pedestrian traffic.

The city was now fully awake, and the noise of its hustle and bustle grew steadily. He stood up after a while and climbed onto the ledge. He stood there and watched the scene below for a final time. Then he spread his wings and flew off unseen into the blue sky…
