The Path With No Ending

The Path With No Ending

Nothing was new for me anymore. The night was still dark and I could see the stars hanging up in the sky, looking majestically down on us. There were a few dark and moody looking clouds but they were always there, just like everything else was. I could almost taste the air as it was a thick smog that contained an aroma of decay and mould. I could still hear the stream on my right and the water gushing across into the river and the insects crying out in their tiny voices, only to be heard by careless humans. It was like any other evenings where I would wonder off into the ghostly forest where even light could not venture. But I had a different feeling today and a hive of butterflies anxiously speeding around in my stomach as I took my first step into the woods.
Trying not to tremble, I came across a vintage glass piece smashed on the floor. It looked like the one my mum made when I was younger. The thought of my mum brought tears to my eyes as I kept on tracking the hidden footsteps under the shadows. My mum had been missing for three years now and it was all of a sudden. It was happening a lot in these areas where woman and children kept on getting kidnapped by a ghostly silhouette which never showed its physical body. It went by the name ā€˜Annabelleā€™ and it was getting very viral. Some people say that Annabelle lives in these woods and anyone who enters never actually leaves out alive, but I donā€™t knowā€¦
I was too busy thinking about Annabelle that I completely forgot what I was doing until I heard a really loud crunch followed by a terrifying scream that gave cold shivers down my spine. My heart skipped a beat as I saw a shadow just like the one that people described Annabelle. ā€˜What do I do? What do I do?ā€™, was all I could think of when the shadow was getting bigger. The leaves around me were too low and they were a colour of brown and green. There was no chance I could hide behind the grass. Then I noticed a gap between the patch of grass and I think it was a pathway. Yes! It was a pathway! This was my chance and I didnā€™t waste any time and ran as fast as my legs could run.
I was panting like a hungry dog wagging its tail for food but that didnā€™t stop me from running. As I was running, the forest was playing games on me. Something didnā€™t seem right and at this time I was in no state to think. The trees around had long crooked branches that looked as if they were trying to grab me from all around and rip me in pieces. The grass now looked like a soft cloud all around with broken branches sticking out of them. I was taking long steps now, and it had been five minutes since I had been running but I had been getting back to the same spot. Was I running in circles? My precious mum always told me to never go near this forbidden forest and called me her gem in this desert. I never understood what she meant when she used to say desert but now, I understand what she had meant. This place was not a home for even the roughest living animals or insects and was a type of hell on earth.Ā
I was going to sit down to rest. But I started hearing a familiar sound calling for me. It wasā€¦ my mum. A spark of hope immediately ignited inside my heart as I thought it was my mum but then suddenly something started to happen. My mum appeared in front of me but she was not coming towards me. She was parting away from me. I tried to scream for her but something had gotten stuck in my throat and I was unable to speak. I tried to cry but it was no use. Tears were swelling inside me as I desperately tried to grasp my mumsā€™ hand. But I couldnā€™t.Ā  I just couldnā€™t. There was water gushing from all around me now and all I could hear was my name until I suddenly woke up and found my self standing on a pathway. My hopes went high too fast until when I realised it was the same pathway that I was running on. The same rocks had been uselessly lying there and the same branches were decaying on the side of the path way.
Something was different now. I could see a slight twist in the path and there was light on the other side. That was my chance and my ticket out of here. I ran like the wind and jumped out and to my surprise, I found my self at the finish line. Then everything made sense. I was in a race competition for Ā£20000 where I had to get out of this forest. But I felt a sleep and somehow had a bad dream. I could see my mum waving for me and this time, I was glad that my mum came. Glad she was there, well and alive. I received the cheque and I could smell the paper and it was brand new so the stench was strong.
