Too deep to dig up

The year is....er...god who even knows anymore? My name is Audrie. Im about fourteen years old. My life is a long story. I wasn't suppose to be born but things happen. My mum is dead. I never knew my father. The only person I know is James. He was my babysitter before everything happened.
When I was a kid I absolutely loved zombie movies. I watched every single one my mum could find. But when the disease hit I started to think about the way people acted because of the disease. We all had different names for them. The common ones like walkers and runners and infected. We called them zombies. It was a joke between me and my mother. But when we were around other people they were called infected.
James and my mom were best friends. I would always see them together when I was a kid. I learned later that James was my mothers half-brother. He took care of her when my grandfather left them. My families kind of a mess.
A few months ago my mom got infected. We tried to take care of her but the disease set in and we had to let her go. I wouldn't eat for an extreme time and eventually became malnourished. James found me one day. Passed out on my bed. My ribs were so prominent it seemed that with one little jolt my skin would split. I realized it was ridiculous for me to stop eating. Stop living but it was so hard seeing one of the only people in my life suffer.
After that I left with James. And now we come to present day:
I shift through my knapsack looking for any leftover food. I reach to the bottom and find a few energy bars. I sigh.
"James were almost out of food"
"Were near a town. I see it on the map. As long as its not to infested we can check some of the stores." He doesn't look up when he talks. He draws a line on the map with a dark piece of charcoal.
"Its about twenty-five miles up the road. Stay in the trees but make sure you can see the highway." He nods towards the lush forest on my right.
I grab my rifle and pull Blue, the horse, into the greenery. The highway was destroyed when the government tried to bomb the city in hope that most of the infected would be killed. It worked for a while but it didn't last. Just like every zombie movie ever made. I sigh a reload. Were low on food but not on bullets.
James gives the signal, a whistle, that means were in sight of the town. I look up from reloading my weapon to see a small village with barbed wire fences surrounding it. I see several holes I could fit into. I see a few that James could squeeze through. I strap my rifle onto my back and gently nudge Blue into a gallop. James does the same and soon we hit town.
