Tranquility

Tranquility

Trees clustered on a grassy expanse reach to a pale blue sky of endless dimension, with no Earthly bound to its vertical extension. A gentle breeze awakens eucalypt leaves; emerald green contrasting against an aerial canvas that fades through paler hues of blue as it unfurls skyward. The coming of a new day whispers rustled greetings in the wind as it stops and swirls through the silvery-grey branches. Painted as if with bright yellow oils; the flaring disk of the sun shimmers against a background of pale blue powder. Its morning rays accent the intricacy of this creation, a tranquil display of nature’s magnificent, living artwork. Sunbeams stream warm life down to this pristine patch of Earth; magically transforming beads of dew on the grasses into a green sea studded with countless, brilliant-cut diamonds. Great billowing sails with no mast or rig, scattered clouds drift lazily without care; dawn crimson and turquoise now bleached white and the texture of a new alpine snowfall. Swallows call in morning flight, swooping up and diving sharply to glide barely off the surface of a shallow stream. The stream is framed by low banks of dark rocks splotched with lichen coloured pale green and even a strikingly bright shade of orange. The clear water comes from somewhere high in a rocky, brush covered range to the grassland plain below. Down slopes and through narrow gullies lined with granite and quartz, the stream descends briskly from its source then slows onto the plain to wind through the clusters of eucalypt and overhanging paper-bark trees at the foot of the hills. In the slow moving water momentary reflections appear: fleeting snapshots of the graceful fork-tailed birds suspended in animation. Meandering under the paper-barks, the flow whorls over rocks shaped by the fluid motion of a liquid sculptor, whose centuries of patient endeavor have worn away once rough surfaces; revealing smooth, dark cobblestones in rich brown and grey-black tones. This untainted fountain of life will make its slow, timeless pilgrimage to channel into the vastness of an ocean - a stark blue line behind a stretch of white dunes at the grassland edge…
