Moon

If ever the moon nursedÂ
The sea the face
On the water's surfaceÂ
Surely would scorn me.
Another loving motherÂ
Whose subjects rob her
Of grief and all that'sÂ
Allowed is a smile forced
Through the teeth.
If ever the moon wished
To be kind
You'd find she was
Passive and more gentleÂ
Than she'd like being.
Rather she would have
Spoken her mind
Were the sea willing toÂ
Listen.
Nothing's enough to lessenÂ
The hurt the way the worldÂ
Has injured her,
How she seeks permission.
It is bold to speakÂ
To the world about inclusion.
The moon, then, representsÂ
An unsilenced opposition
And that begrudging smileÂ
Becomes the smile ofÂ
Satisfaction. The world wouldÂ
Than share that accomplishment,
Reflect the moon'sÂ
Face back off the still sea
And the moon's smile
Catch on to my smile,
Me staring downwardÂ
But being looked out for fromÂ
  heaven.
