144 ( Aberfan Remembered )

The land slipped into school today
To change our lives and stop our play
The land slipped into school today
Why it came I could not say
But the land slipped into school today

One hundred and forty four
Was the brutal score
All of childhood went out the door
Came home no more

My father on his bended kneeĀ
Tore at the ground so furiously
Mothers and aunties wrapped in shawls
All trying to remove big black fall
The land slipped into school today

The rain had poured for many days
And caused the heap to slip and slide
It careered sown the mountain side
Sliding on the coal dust tide
When the land slipped into school

It’s been forty years since that fateful day
When the land slipped into school that day
And with all us children in the way
And innocent lives were swept away
When the land slipped into school
