A Journey Into Solitude

I have loved you so long that I have neglected to notice
the night crimson into morn and turnover into day.
With sun at high noon,
kicking up dust in transcendent splendor,
we meet in the middle.
Two desperadoes,
guns at the ready,
fingers twitching nervously,
or two sailors, two captains,
ready at the helm, forging the iron ship over the roiling sea.
I have fallen into a sober state of quiet contemplation.
I have stared blissfully into evergreen,
I have traced the pattern on lilac plate under plastic scrambled eggs.
I have transcribed my heart's benediction,
onto a map of Europe,
and I leave you knowing that I will always believe,
the sun shone for us,
and us alone.
