A Lost Soul

A love so dry as the leaves on the ground
It hurts me just to hold your clammy hand
I try to whisper but can't make a sound
I stare with remorse at my wedding band

How does one modestly fall out of love
With a man she's known for eternity
A curse, a bond that was sent from above
With a gift as cold as maternity

That child, so small, was my only anchor
But torn from me, my sweet little baby
Her breath had stopped because my "love" sank her
An accident it could have been, maybe

Yet I will never love that man again
My heart has rotted and just brings the pain

Cold and harrowing imagery; the writing is bitter, ironical and powerfully evocative.
A brilliantly executed sonnet, using the inherent dialectical aspects of the form to map the turning of one powerful emotion to its opposite.

Magnificent!
