A Tale of Love’s Betrayal

Alas, what prick upon my side is found!
A thorn, a thorn, my flight hath been betrayed,
Yet in this pain, a new resolve is wound,
To seek the truth, though love itself be frayed.
Oh, treachery, thy face is like a friend,
Thy kiss, a viper's touch, a poison sweet.
My trust, a tender shoot, thou didst bend,
And left me here, in sorrow to retreat.
But hark! What light through yonder window breaks?
It is the east, and he, the sun, who took
My heart and promised love, but false vows makes.
His words, like honey, from his lips they shook.
The nightingale, she sings a mournful tune,
For lovers lost and love that died too soon.
My heart, once full of joy, now beats in gloom,
For he hath shown his colors, dark as doom.
For love is not a game for fools to play,
Nor hearts a prize for treacherous hands to sway.
I'll guard my soul, keep false ones far away,
And wait for one whose love will never stray.
So let the stars bear witness to my plight,
And moon, cast down thy beams of silver light.
I'll wash away the stain of this dark night,
And find a love that burns forever bright.
