After Midnight Blues

After Midnight Blues

Wee mornin' blues
with loneliness takin' its' dues.
Emptiness is seeping under the door
as I stare at the floor.
While I'm sittin' in the dark
by my cigarette glow.
Heat from the smoke
burns my throat
as into the blackness
I blow.
Memories of time gone past
filled with woe and pain last.Β
Dreariness no longer slumbers
after awaking and rising
from my warm bed and covers.
The clock ticks on
as an inner voice bellows out;
" In hell you belong!"Β
An unseen black snake
has slithered beneath my chair.
I can hear its' hissing
and feel its' wicked glare.
I'm engulfed by shame
knowing that I have only myself
to blame.Β
Still the will to survive lingers
as I take another drag
from the cig between my fingers.
