Alicia

Alicia

A light-hearted smile hid her world full of fears,
A demon inside had controlled her for years.

She wanted to change, but her weakness was stronger,
than the fight in her heart which existed no longer.

"You're young and so beautiful, don't give up on yourself,
Focus on your future, your family, your health."

I knew that my words would not change her life,
but maybe these words could help remove the knife
which stuck in her heart, causing sadness and pain,
Could she could evict this demon, alive in her brain?

We smoked our last cigarette that Thursday night,
The sun was still shining, the sky filled with light.

"Have a great weekend, see ya Monday!"
Who would have known you'd be gone on Sunday?"

Another life taken by a quick fix of dope,
A drug that creates such a false sense of hope.

Your light-hearted smile hid your world full of fears,
You deserved to see more than just 28 years...

A heartrending tale told with simple grace and a little bit of poetic flair.

Wonderful!

WOW!! RACHEL GATES!!... this is a marvelous piece for several reasons...... it has a great sense of rhythm and timing that is delivered within a VERY compelling formatting...... almost sonnet-like.... but the way you broke lines and stanza's added to the overall impact of the story line..... you definitely have a knack for story telling......... setting up the readers minds eye for the blow of the "Last Cigarette" before death.......ALL STARS!!..... well conceived and BEAUTIFULLY delivered!!..... and WELCOME to COSMO!!...... hope this was a fiction.... but I have a feeling it's got truth at its core....... God bless!!........T xo. ?✳✴☀

Heart wrenching sorrow served with a beautiful story. Still very compelling as a docudrama of how life needs to cherished and most especially the next five minutes to hang onto has saved me so many times. Good stuff!!

This poem beautifully but tragically tells the story of too many. I hope that putting this into words helps others.

Beautiful....and sad. Sorry for your loss as the poem looks to be written from experience.
