Always have been,always will be

You had me from hello,
always have been my number one,
the only true love,
you have taken residence in my heart,
we are soul mates; best mates,
you don't need me as you used to
but are always in me,
like a faithful scarecrow fending off the birds,
we look out for each other,
are protective over each other. 
so when I told my mother that I didn't love her as much as I love you;
she just gave a knowing smile
and her approval, 
you always have been my number one,
