Answered Prayer
True story dedicated to all those that served in WW2 which kept us free!
They had to fly a very long way!
Attack scheduled without delay!
Flew to the limit of their fuel range,
Try and make it back; after exchange!
Over the vast dark ocean at night!
There is no up or down without light.
No radar to find his pathway back!
Lucky to have survived the attack!
Closed his eyes and offered prayer,
While lost and alone; up in the air!
Got an impression, " turn off your lights,"
For himself he thought, be no more flights!
He obeyed, and to his great surprise!
A phenomenon he realized!
Plankton; bio luminosity,
Guided him home to his ship at sea!

A fantastic and amazing story. Really enjoyed this one Jim and had pleasure in your unique style of poetry. Smashing poem here my friendÂ
thank you so much Max! your sea life saved the day"night" for sure! the plankton stirred up by the props of the big air craft carrier lit them up and he followed that trail back to his ship! they finally turned on the lights of the ship which could have helped enemy subs see them! but took the chance because so many planes were lost!
Great write Jim...where would we be without our heros....X
for sure Marion! thank you bunches!
Love this poem. Salute to him and other soldiers. After his prayer, God gave him guidance and maybe God's angels helped protect him. Â
thank you so much Shirley! I believe no doubt in your statement! Heavenly Father loves all His children in all conflicts and helps those that seek Him!
Brilliant poem! I remember reading this story somewhere. Well done you for crafting a poem on it! What a fabulous job you have done here x

lovely tribute to those airmen.
Best wishes.
thank You Mr. Barker!
thank You Hj!
thank You Syd!
Brilliant Jim and beautifully written, I remember a WW2 documentary about a veteran pilot talking on the matter and the very same scenario was spoken in Apollo 13 with Tom Hanks portraying Jim Lovell but said veteran pilot wasn't Lovell, he was too young to serve at the time.
That's just Hollywood spinning things.
And as your most respectful poem engagingly illustrates, he like so many were brave aviators and made of the right stuff.
Thanks Jim and will always enjoy a well written poem based on truth.
Â
thank you bunches Shaun!
WOW - This was a really impressive piece ! It invoked visual images in my head as I read it -especially the last part !
Congratulations on your nomination !
thank you!
Hi Jim, I meant to comment on this poem a while ago but never got around to it (although I did highly rate and pin it) excellent poem. I think you have a very good chance of winning the monthly contest.Â
Also, thanks for your support on my writing. Means a lot - SydÂ
no worries Syd! always my friend! thank you!
Hi Jim. What a poignant piece of poetry you have crafted based on history. I dont know this story....so for me I'm reading it for the first time. I was not expecting the ending....how magnificent is that...nature answered his prayers. Amazing write. Congratulations on the nomination. Hope you win!! Pxxx
Hi Pratibha! thank you!
I loved reading this Jim. Sorry I am late. You have ensured that true heroâs are not forgotten. What a story with the plankton saving the day ! Impressive narration and thank you for reminding us of such brave souls xÂ
thank you Gwen!
Jim I didn't realise at the time of my previous comment your poem was in the contest running, so good luck to you and may the best poem, poet and poetess win.
And I came late to this contest thingy and it's mechanisms and pray tell how is the eventual winner decided???
Is it by a Cosmo cabal midnight meeting of it's owners, held in some vast gothic candle-lit cold granite hall who are all dressed in black hooded silk robes, who simply say upon looking at all three poems presented on a seventy foot long onyx table...
THAT ONE! THAT ONE WE DEEM WORTHY!!!!
I just don't know how the Dickens a winner is chosen and the process involved.
Any way Jim, just wished all in the running good luck and all that jazz.
And I'm unbiased and completely neutral in this contest and it's eventual worthy winner, but secretly I'm a sucker for a well written WW2 poem.
And good luck again my friend and enjoy poetry and life.
Â
that is funny Shaun!!! I hope they don't strap me to the onyx table and chant! lol! I have no idea what the process is, and even if I get something I messed up my paypal account and will probably never see a dime! lol! it is more fun to get all this verbal support from my friends than any monetary gain! your friend always!..............Jim
