Are You There?

As I sank down into the darkness
The light of day slowly dissipated
The horizon-
Civilization itself-
They both eluded me-
Escaped me like a bad joke
My mind was running
Running like crazy
Like a mouse on a wheel
A fierce tornado of thoughts kicked up
Fear
Paranoia
Confusion
They were all scooped up en route

The pressure greeting me now
Wasn't so friendly
It was rather unnerving
As I sank further and further
Into the darkness
My mind gave into the invasion
Poseidon, God of the Sea
Sent fourth his minions
To invade my ears
And invade my nostrils

I felt myself slipping
Slipping from consciousness
I could hear my brother yelling
Pleading for help from above water
My eyes closed
Not being much of a religious person
I prayed
I prayed hard
I didn't care who was listening
I just needed someone to hear me

Suddenly there was a hand on my shoulder
I opened my eyes slightly
I was blinded by this intense white light
Within that light I saw someone
Something
It started pulling me up
Up and out of the water
Back toward the horizon
Back toward civilization
I popped my head above the surface
I floated there aimlessly for a moment

Once I gained full consciousness
I closed my eyes again
This time I basked in the daylight
A lifeguard was now swimming toward me fast
My brother anxiously awaited on the shore
What exactly just happened here?
Did I just experience a miracle?
God, are you there?
