AT THE EDGE OF NIGHT

In the still of the nightÂ
Under a canopy of darknessÂ
From a distance echoesÂ
A distinctive soundÂ
Stiletto heels piercing the asphaltÂ
As she glides her way through the townÂ
While wives are asleepÂ
Husbands at their windows peekÂ
Trying to get a glanceÂ
Of this goddess curvesÂ
With only a silhouette of her beautyÂ
Made visible by the dim street lightsÂ
It's enough to arouseÂ
Those cheating hearts nervesÂ
Her shape was chiseledÂ
By the desires of men
For she was never in the daylight seen
But in the minds of those vagabonds
Transfixed behind their windowpaneÂ
She was their midnight dancerÂ
In their elusive dreams.
Wilford Barker.
