Awaiting a Soldier

Awaiting a Soldier

I sit on my porch
I wait for the roar
The roar of the red jeep
And boots on the floor
So as I sat and waited
For him to come home
I thought to myself, "So this is what it feels like,
being alone.."
I'd waited and waited
A year came and went
So did every birthday
And all other events
But soon he'd be home
I wouldn't lose hope
Because I made him a promise
The last time we spoke
I told him I'd wait
As long as it took
But waiting drew me back
Like a fish on a hook
I'd been waiting so far,
And so long, I'm afraid,
I'd missed out on growing
With kids all my age
I'd missed all the milestones,
The dreaming; the fun
I watch through my window
As kids play and run
So I thought to myself,
"How come I don't do that?"
Because I took too long waiting
On someone not coming back.
