Back To Troy
Summer of '88

How I remember the exact date of our meeting
It was the day after my father's birthday
It was quiet, uneventful, somewhat sound
Peace landed on hamlet ground
Partly overcast, high above zero
It was May and warm enough
to be summer
IΒ chopped the balsam wood
to pass the time and work out...
a plan for this Friday evening awaiting
Calls to friends brought a contemplating
Mad debating with no one
Squirrels in my head just kept reminding...
that I am just fifteen
I am old enough, I tell myself reassuringly
I have beer that I procured by shrewdness
I have ways to make fun, create delight...
in mundane times, "Well, not tonight."
Back in my room, I open a beer
Dad walks in as I look out the window
With my scopes I see...
someone, a girl I've seen
In town, walking in such a way
I was convinced the world belonged to her
As far as the other pretties, they were...
not like the Helen I saw
A thousand ships were launched
When I saw her porcelain face
Now she was here, my heart quivered
Dad asked me, "What do you see?"
He looked out the window and said, "Son...
she looks like trouble. Maybe you should run."
I grabbed my beer and ran out the back door
To the outhouse where I hid in fear
All pride was gone
Hummed a tune and thought of olden times
Tried transcendental meditation
This outhouse will be my ship, I mused
I won't be here much longer, confused
She won't get me, won't enslave me, no
I am gone to another place and time
Then there's a knock on the door
My two "gracious" cousins are there
Telling me, "Come out, there's someone here."
I knew who that someone was, except her name
She was "Helen". Love is to blame
I opened the door and there she was
She smiled and I began to sink
With all my thousand ships
We made Troy that night, I was a prince
I felt more in love than Paris was
For I did not steal her, she came to me
It was written in the stars of destiny
Until the time came when she "sailed away"
Leaving me adrift, to wait for...
when we go back to Troy

Thank you so much, Tony. I like to take a little trip down memory lane once in a while. Don't we all. I took this true story a little farther. Somewhere I imagined me and her. It was really a magical, fun and innocent time. Now we are alot older, and lost contact, a part of me wants to go back with her. To Troy.? Sorry couldn't resist. But, thanks again, brother for your invaluable feedback! Peace ?
exceptionally written piece. well done Michael
Thank you very much, Poetess. A little trip down memory lane once in a while is good for the soul.Β
This had me glued to the screen. Such a well written freestyle narrative! I love the way you called her Helen and related it all (the love stuff) to that. I just know I will want to read this again so I pinned it x
Thank you, BM. I'm glad you like it. True story. I just didn't reveal her name, but I thought of her as Helen. I was thinking maybe I should add to this poem, make another chapter or two. Peace
Perhaps you should!
