Poem -

BEAST OF BURDEN

And as they placed the bit in your mouth
I felt your horror
And as they startled you with whips
I felt your pain
And with the carriage strapped
To your sweating
back
I cried as your spirit broke and cracked

And I watched you toil in bastard towns
Blinkers on and head low down
To labour on through dusk and
dawn
Through coldest cold, through
rain and storm

Mired in toil, though I felt your dreams
To gallop free in the greenest
fields
So I saved and saved to bring
you home
Lush pastures new to call your
own

Companion spirits at your side
No more to toil or fear or hide
To drink from streams on
younder hill
Now my heart sings loud to
feel your thrill

And you raise your head as I
pass by
And all is said in the eye to eye
Such gentle soul so dear to me
Not beast, proud spirit, wild
and free.
