BEFORE THE GRAVE

My dear child
I am alive, and you have alreadyÂ
Forgotten about me
Your absence has caused me much sorrow
The hush of your voice compounds the pain
How I wish that you were as faithfulÂ
As that old oak tree that still stands
In the corner of the yard, giving shadeÂ
From the sun’s rays
I can remember the joy, excitementÂ
And uncontrollable energy that flooded my heart
Upon the announcement of your conceptionÂ
And how can I forget, looking into your eyes
For the first time.
Your cry declaring your unique voice
And at the same time, begging for my embraceÂ
Of which I gave freely and constantly.
Now that my steps have become few
The sun’s glory is fading before my eyes
And this old house lives with pain
I sit alone and afraid.
My child
I am alive, and you have alreadyÂ
Forgotten about me.
Wilford Barker.
