Bircotes to the Skies
In late 1941,RAF BIRCOTES was born
Made as a training facility,as most of Europe was war torn
It was located next to the No.1 Group,RAF Bomber Command
A unit moved from Huckall,to newly commandeered farming land
Used by Avro Manchester's and Arson's and Vickers Wellington's too
From No.25 Operational Training Unit, the RAF OTU
British,Canadian and Polish, were the personnel stationed here
To learn the trade of an airman, pilot, navigator and bombardier
But alas,in wartime,some pay a terrible cost
In Wellington BK471 that took to the skies from Bircotes, ended in four lives lost
All Polish airmen were on this plane
In Newark-on-Trent,their bodies remain
It would be sad to forget, such a sacrifice
A monument to their service, would be so nice
At least to be remembered by locals, where the airfield stood
As they paid for our freedom and paid with their blood
