Clean Dancing

In the Fall of 1961, the beginning of my high school Senior year;
They made a great announcement, which we all were glad to hear!
For till then, on every Friday night, there was a dance for separate groups;
The Catholics, Jews, and Protestants, all boogied in their own loops!
.
But it was decided to have one Nonsectarian, where all religions could attend;
At the beautiful Grace Methodist Church, a lovely invitation to extend!
The word got out, the place was packed, at least five hundred came;
An amalgamation of excited youth, not knowing many of each other’s names!
.
They announced a contest, the Jitterbug, I knew who I thought would win;
My little be-bop friend Jerome, no one could match him and his spins!
Sure enough, my instincts were right, he won the prize hands down;
But the next one, the Slow Dance contest, was the one of my renown!
.
I partnered with a girl I knew, we had danced sometimes before;
It took not long for the judges see, we were the best team on the floor!
A dip or two, a lot of whirls, our tempo hit every beat;
We were the Slow Dance Champions, which we thought was really neat!

My Dear Cherie,
A few months ago, I took Linda on a nostalgic ride through Dayton, and all my youthful haunts. We passed the beautiful Grace Methodist Church, which still stands regally, just as it did sixty years ago. She was amazed at how majestic it still is today.
By the way, my poor friend Jerome passed away very young, of a heart attack.
I am very excited to tell you that I have just completed a book about all these experiences from my youth, with one hundred poems, and Haikus. I am in the act of writing the Foreword, and it should be ready in a few days.
All my love,
Larry xxx
