Coming of Age

Coming of Age

Barbie dolls lay broken,
Their glazed eyes dull and dusty,
Their dresses torn and stained.

Toy cars park in ruins,
Their paint jobs scratched and dented,
Their wheels long since missing.

Forgotten teddy bears,
Their insides spilling from open seams,
Left behind in closets and drawers.

Santa Claus and his seven reindeer,
Replaced by the man with free candy,
Driving his magic white van.

The school playground is empty,
Slides pockmarked with bullet holes,
Needles littering the sandbox.

Saturday morning cartoons,
Animated laughter barely audible,
Shattered by the gunshots down the street.

Once spending an allowance,
On candies from the dollar store,
Now bills flood countertops and rubbish bins.

The fiery sunset fading into night,
Shadows creep along the cracked pavement,
Smothering the last sounds of children’s play.

The fish of the sea

Lol, sorry it took me so long for me to comment lol, this is such an amazing write, so very detailed, makes it extremely engaging. Growing up can be tough and daunting, the best way to do so is with family and or friends.... you displayed this very well in your poem. Enjoyed. Welcome to the cosmos! The Fish of the Sea.

Wow!! What a work!!! First of all when reading I thought it was about a school, shooting then about the 'empty nest'. On further reading though it speaks to me of a disappointment ...with life, with adulthood and all its struggle....the magic, safety and...lies...of childhood long gone. The child's eager ultimate destination a disappointment that doesn't live up to what it promised on the tin...I have pinned for its uniqueness and quiet sadness...hugs ?...welcome, fab first write ...
