Common sense

Common sense

When they passed out the common sense
There were all these beautiful men
Who were sick and could not return
I brought out the listening device
In my nurses uniform

Some of them always tried to bend me
I bent for them

Even when I really meant to be alone
The wounded men would follow me home

Or I would nestle in their hollow wholes
And let myself go
Rootless

And all the while my soul was begging
Come to me come to me
Walk tall where you belong

the small voice that you forget upon awakening

And what I could change
Was shown to me
They were sick and cannot return

And your only victory
Is too walk on by
Take off your uniform
