Creatures

I've known pain
felt it's shadow 
in dark alleys and ruined lives
where hope is abandoned 
for getting through the day
forgotten by Gods and men
I've felt pain immeasurable 
in eyes drained of life

I've sat in their midst laughing 
dreamt with them
dared to walk the darkness 
hand in hand 
"let's dare," they said

who was I to save anyone?like them--
I am the child of a lessor God 
brethren of the night

the scurry of the rat
howl of the wolf
glimmering sheen on a fox's pelt
flight of the bat 
we found them fascinating 
Night Creatures

my pain morphed into rage
eons ago 
I sought the pain of others 
those of us even as we sat in packs;
walking alone into the night 
solace absolution release numbing 
from wounds that never heal
into the dark 
even as we held hands 
where questions outweighed answers 
we were alone 
shunned 
ugly
magnificent
