The Cruel Sea

The Cruel Sea

The twilight light it fades
Sea winds are blowing free
White foam topping the waves
There are whitecaps on the sea

In the old fishing village
the cottage lamps are set alight
Their men the sea can pillage
Lost in the dark of night

The children in the windows
Faces pressed against the pane
Seeing how the wind blows
Praying for fathers back again

Lightning storms upon the waters
Boats are tossed about the sea
Children pray to their maker
Bring Dad home again to me

The church bells they are ringing
A boat is lost this night
In heaven souls are singing
As they travel to its light

Just the reckless roaring ocean
With the storm winds strong and wild
Make a widow of a mother
And an orphan of her child

Interesting side to something I enjoy so much and certainly 'food for thought'!
