Dark Horse

Dark Horse

I am the kid
that was picked
last when sport teams
were formed
in grade school

I often was told
" Seat Taken "
when I tried
to find a seat
on the School Bus

The Girls
never seemed
to favor
me
as I was
not the Jock
who was
Mr. Popular
at Godwin High

I had to fight
to defend myself
almost everyday
growing up

My principal
told
my parents
that it was
highly unlikely
that I would graduate
from High School

In the Army
the Drill Sgt
threatened
to kick me out
of Boot Camp
as I was not
considered
"Soldier Material"

Rejection
was a friend
of mine
No was the
most heard
word
that was spoken
to me
in the World
that I knew

And

At face
value
a reasonable
prudent
person
would conclude
that I never
had a fighting
chance to succeed

That conclusion
would be incorrect

Having to face
disappointment
early in life
Being told
I did not
belong
created
perseverance
and the
determination
to move
ahead
conquering
all the adversaries
that sought or seek
to create road blocks
along the way

You see I am the
Dark Horse
I cannot be tamed
I cannot be
Controlled
and in the end
with all
gamblers
betting
against
me
I will
Win
