Dear Road

I'm riding you towards my destinationÂ
been aching to leave this place behindÂ
this city that's always under a black pallÂ
of trapped hopelessnessÂ
now I ride your smooth gray ribbonÂ
hurtling towards hell or happinessÂ
the livid orange sky bisectedÂ
with gray clouds of promiseÂ
I can feel the shackles looseningÂ
from my wrists and anklesÂ
where I'll go doesn't seem to matterÂ
the silky purr of the motorÂ
is music to sustain meÂ
I'm just ensorcelled by the factÂ
you never seem to stop windingÂ
it is like staring into a mirrorÂ
seeing endless portraits of oneselfÂ
being haunted by those dizzying echoesÂ
of invincibilityÂ
and possibilityÂ
I ride you all the wayÂ
you are an empty slateÂ
etched in dots that leadÂ
towards beautiful unknownsÂ
you teach a classÂ
in choice and freedomÂ
and suddenly everythingÂ
that came beforeÂ
just doesn't exist anymoreÂ
as my son laughs wideÂ
in the rear-view mirrorÂ
with one bruised eyeÂ
and I laugh with himÂ
ignoring the painÂ
of my purple smarting cheekÂ
because thankfullyÂ
I've finally come to my sensesÂ
and left the man forever
