Deeper In

I just got myself 
back on the shore... 
My heart pounding  
my body is sore. 

Just trying to catch 
my breath again... 
Coughing and gasping 
to get air in.  

So happy to feel 
earth on my skin... 
No longer wanting 
to fight or swim. 

Somehow able  
to pull myself in... 
Not ready to jump 
back in again. 

You sat down beside  
me on the shore... 
Just as a friend and  
nothing more. 

Warm sunlight shining 
where hope was dim... 
Who knew what  
was about to begin? 

Shared all heartbreak 
and tearful pain... 
Speaking of love and 
loss unrestrained. 

Not wanting to let 
go of the past... 
Way too early, 
so quick and too fast 

You coaxed me 
back in the water... 
Though I fought; 
you fought harder. 

At first we stayed 
near the shore... 
Playing in the surf 
and nothing more. 

You slowly pulled 
me deeper in... 
The surf pounding 
upon my skin. 

Unrelenting not 
seeing an end... 
Wave after wave 
so much deeper in. 

Not knowing which 
way was up or down... 
No air to breathe.. 
I thought I would drown. 

You held on tightly 
with both hands... 
Pulling me deeper 
with all your plans. 

I tried so hard to 
get us to shore... 
I wanted less but 
you needed more. 

During this struggle  
truth came to me... 
She who left was 
my true destiny. 

I let you go and 
swam for the shore... 
I felt for you but  
I loved her more. 

Each day... I am 
pulled deeper in.. 
Into a love that  
has be born again.
