Double-parked

Double-parked

I am double-parked in a slum district avenue
Crime is loud but peacefully cries
Suited lawmen smoke, their lies on queue
Forgetting what was true and wise

Cruising guillotines entice with flair
Watch their drivers stop and stare
Smile and you may lose your head
Wheels will burn and you'll be dead

More of the same, says a critic of theatre
Fumbling for dollars to buy the powder
An actress struts by and now he feared her
She was sweet, now crime is louder

Hoodlums congregate at a chapel gate
Bones in their eyes, but love in their hate
The suited lawmen look, the cigarettes burn
They decide with gin and choose to adjourn

I am double-parked on a street of gold
As the sun sets and lends an aura of heaven
The engine turns and my blood runs cold
When darkness falls hearts will leaven
