Downs and Out
For Jimmy

He has gone now he left today
I don’t expect we shall meet again.
He would spend all the hours of the day
building objects with an old Lego
set in the orphanage.

Mostly cars sometimes spaceships
but never skyscrapers
they were too hard to do he explained.

What was hard, he did not understand
unaccepting parents who could not
see the astounding beauty that his
scrambled chromosomes and
forever young soul possessed.

The other children
stayed clear of him whilst
not understanding that his gentleness,
was his only blessing from the angels.

The system and foster homes
came and went.
Jimmy had seen them all
at one time or the other.
Only eleven but he felt
as old as a senior citizen.

They took him to a home today
for the mentally challenged
with special needs.
I heard the nurse say to the
dressed for success social worker
He will be better off there
we cant handle them here when they
get to be older.

He smiled softly as he left
waving to us at the door.
Wishing only to be
reassured the new place
had a Lego set.
