Dreams of Vaccines

A foot on our hearts
Stomp, Stomp, Stomp
Hands clasped together
Singing through the wind
Desperately wanting
Not knowing if we sinned
A hot pressing feeling
Spilling over the edge
Boiling our hands
Crawling up our throats
Making themselves known
A breath of air released
A breath we didn’t know we were holding
Singing happy songs
“The wave, it is receding!”
To the church bells in the distance
Loud comforting beats
Of all the hope in the world
We didn’t even eat
School is canceled
Drape the walls with silk
Hug your children close
Other couldn’t
But you will
Gather around
All hail the Salk
The polio vaccine has been found
