Ember

Ever heard of the things that go bump in the night?
When you're home on your own and they give you a fright
The night is all calm, there's a vespertine stillness
But that's just the start of a long night of cruelness.

The story starts out with a girl so, so young,
With boys on her mind as words flow from her tongue.
Her name is Ember, not an age past sixteen
Alone in a house with the deadly unseen.

Her parent's are gone on a weekend long trip
Cruising the ocean on an elegant ship.
As the story begins she's in her room all alone
discussing her business with a friend on the phone

'They've actually gone, for a few days at least
They won't be home until monday next week'
She shared her excitement with her closest friend
who asked what she'd be doing with such a weekend
"I'm sure I'll find something" she said with a frown
"Let me know what your doing, then i might come 'round'
"Yes that'll be great, I'll soon let you know
"Ember, look at the time! I should let you go"
"ok then goodnight" and she hung up the phone
and lay back on her bed, once again all alone

The clock chimes for midnight, the silence was eerie
Ember stays in her room feeling tired and weary
She picks up a book and leans back on her bed
opens the pages and raises her head
Enjoying the thought of the story inside
She then hears a screech that sends chills down her spine
The cry of a woman, what is that she thought

Maybe my parents trips been cut short

she slides off the bed and throws on her gown
Pacing the hallway searching for the sound
"Whose there?!" She cries out, but she gets no reply
so she flicks on the light to unveil the cry
the light fills the darkness theres not a soul to be seen
Not the tiniest clue to what that shriek could have been
She searched every room both upstairs and down
But how could it be? There's no one around
"All in my head" she believingly said
So she turned off her lights and climbed back into bed

now back to her room to where the story began
she opened the book and read the first line
before she could go further, the same scream filled the room
And she sat up feeling startled and felt a slight sense of gloom
'Theres someone here' she felt quite afraid
'Who are you?' She questioned in a voice, sounding brave
Whose there?!" She asks, again and again
"Ember" she hears, its her very own name.
