Escape
Hush little black kids don't you cry
It won’t be long until you die.
Statistics of a stereotypical African American male and female
Resembles the statistic of an orphan
Out in a world so cold, out so cold. With no one to hold.
No Mary Poppins in the world
Because Ms. Poppins is too scared
To go out in the ghetto because
In the hood everything’s Poppin’ with drug, sex and violence.
Let’s take a glimpse in the life of a black kid in the ghetto.
Like little Sarah and Billy
Who have been friends since they can remember
Matter of fact
Since they’ve been 10.
It happened when momma left Billy
Every morning at 10 just to get high and feel the buzz.
So Billy had to raise himself and four siblings.
While momma was still living her life.
And when Sarah was getting touched in between her thighs
Every other night by her dad
She used to scream and cry
But her mom was so hung over nobody ever listened.
Scarred by their past they wanted to be different, to beat statistic.
It was a celebration in the hood every time a kid hit 18.
Only because they were alive
But a bigger celebration when they finished high school
Without dropping out
Two months out of school little Billy gets shot
For being at the wrong place at the wrong time
Now he’s on the street dying with no one to hold
Not even little Sarah
Because she was waiting for him at home.
She had a surprise to tell him
She was six weeks pregnant
With his baby and she finally got the job out the hood and was ready to move
As soon as possible. To start a family.
Little does she know her baby will be fatherless.
Now somewhere down a long dark alley
Laid the corpse of little Billy.
So close to making it and beating the statistic
So close to
Escape
