Poem -

Eternality

Originally this poem was written in Telugu language (1930) by Umar Ali Shah. This is my English rendering.

Eternality

Oh lord, without seeing you,
as I live on how long shall I weep and hold my breath with tears?
Why don't you say?
Why don't you talk?

Dusks, dawns and twilights are passing by,
Eras and ends of eras have gone.

Like a hard stone my heart doesn't melt at all, neither does it die in the ocean of your love.

How do I see you  through the flames of your art?
In what way do I see you?
Do I have a path?

I searched the whole world. I  searched the heavens. I moved in  spaces, forests, terrible, intolerable, pensive, downward and upward places. I fell down, I crawled up to see you. I tried my best.

But your traces were not found,
Your form was never known.
No one says,
No one knows.

Are you on the sandbanks covered by the density of dust clubbed with darkness? Or, are you at the place where flowers rain? Or, are you at the place where the chirps of beautiful birds touch the sky? Where are you? Where is your place? No one says.

Endless and origin less is your form, to perceive that, I toiled a lot and kept singing.   My voice broke. My spine loosened. Stupefyingly strings of my lyre broke. From my fingers unpleasant blood was spilling out. Breaths were fainted. Oh lord, you are not at all seen. With out seeing you I cannot live. I cannot bear your love.

What will I do? Even life isn't vanishing. At least then, to see my body will you be able to come or not? Perhaps, you will come. After having the touch of your feet, I will rise to see you as always.

I wrote word after word for every drop after drop of my tears. As I cannot bear your love, I have smashed the cave of my heart and viewed further, you have appeared with smiles oh lord!

Thus spoke poet Umar Ali Shah from his understanding.
