Every Grain Of Sand Affects The Tide

Every Grain Of Sand Affects The Tide

Dedicated to Miss Dorothy Herbst
.
Dorothy Herbst taught Literature at Fairview High School in Dayton, Ohio, from 1932-1971.  She was a brilliant woman with a Doctorate Degree, and could have been a top level college professor.  She eschewed that position, for she felt the most important transition that a student could have, was the one from High School, entering into the first year of College.  She devoted herself to readying her students for what she thought was this most vital preparation.  She came from extreme wealth, and had traveled all over the world.  She had met several important writers and musicians, relating stories to us about them, her favorite being the world renowned pianist, Sergei Rachmaninoff.  Those of us that were fortunate enough to study with her, found that when we arrived at College, and took courses in Literature, we were light years better prepared than our peers.  It was my honor to have been one of what she called “her children”. Now, after almost sixty years, her brilliance still influences my life.
.
Now I give to you my dear Miss Herbst, this poem, this Haiku, and all my love.
.
“Every Grain Of Sand Affects The Tide”, a wise adage that she penned;
We all were so very fortunate, to have classes with her spend!
For she was the culmination, of what a teacher should represent;
She dedicated herself to our enlightenment, before to college off we went!

.
“Aim for the stars, my dear children”, words of love for us, she used;
For we were her only progeny, her love in us infused!
For almost forty years she was devoted, to prepare us for future’s way;
She filled us with her acumen, we learned so much each day!

.
I think anyone who knew her, so quickly would agree;
That she was the greatest educator, our nation did ever see!
We thank you our dear Dorothy, for your devotion and your love;
We, your only children, still you guide from up Above!

.
.
                A teacher unique
          She guided us to the stars
         Made our lives shine bright

.

Larry, my dear friend...

igniting young minds
imparting love of wisdom
creates progeny

This is such a beautiful and fitting tribute to an educator who was, obviously, a wonderful woman...and clearly meant the world to you and all of her students.

your friend & fan,

J ;)

My Dear Friend Jason,

Aside from my parents and Linda, she was the most influential person in my life. To this day, I still can feel her powerful presence as I sat in her classroom.  She was like a guiding light, who brought many lost teenagers to a better place.  I shall not trade Haikus with you today, for yours is as beautiful a tribute as could ever be written.

Peace and Love,
Larry xxx

Hi Larry, I wish every child could benefit from similar  wonderful mentors- my own was a dour Scots teacher  called Mrs Maguire- I  loved being in her sphere! She gave me a real appreciation for the written word and of the power of words. Such a lovely tribute to make Larry and loved the Haiku!

Dear lodigiana,

It sounds like many of us had that one special teacher in their lives, that influenced them so strongly.  She was an amazing woman, whose teachings are still guiding me. Thank you for your lovely words.  Sorry for not commenting now on any of your beautiful poems, but it's going to be a while before I am emotionally able to start making them again.

Hugs, Peace and Love,
Larry xxx

Hi Larry,
I had a teacher in my final year who was very spiritual and always seemed to have our well-being at the heart of her. She drove my interest in sociology and why people do what they do. To this day I remember how much she valued each of us, unlike many others to whom we were just a job.
I think it's so important for teachers to actually want the children to be the best version of themselves and Miss Herbst sounds like she really cared.
All my love
Lorna
