Fairytales

Fairytales

I remember being four
And being tucked into bed,
By my mother with a story
To hush the thoughts in my head.

"Once upon a time..."
As the story begun,
From the page to her mouth
A web of  lies spun.

The plots were always similar
With a Castle and a Princess,
A young girl so dissatisfied,
A Damsel in Distress.

"Prince Charming" was the only one
Who could save her from her trife,
True Loves First Kiss her saving grace
To grant the perfect life.

So then my mother would close the book
And kiss me a good night,
She'd peep through the crack as she closed the door
And then turn out the light.

I remember being twenty four
When I met a man on a Wednesday night,
It was was around 8:30pm when he offered me an Apple
And flashed a smile of pearly whites.

My god how he was Charming
And oh we had a Ball!
He gave me my First real Kiss
And tore down my Castle walls.

He used to call me Princess
He showed me love and care,
He told me I deserved a Crown
While he gently played with my hair.

Just like in the stories
All that was good came to him naturally,
We had everything in common
And from all evil he protected me.

Then one day it all changed
It seemed our Fairytale lasted a short while,
That Charming Prince who saved me
Turned into someone cruel, wicked, vile.

That man I met on a Wednesday night
At our quiet local bar,
Soon changed from my biggest Saviour
To a memory written in scars.

We once carved our names into tree trunks
And marked them with a heart,
But he had come only to carve himself into my flesh
And tear my heart apart.

His beautiful smile turned to teeth marks
His holding hands turned into fists,
His eyes grew cold and distant
As our Plot began to twist.

So yes my Prince was Charming
When I met him on that night,
But the Charming exterior was skin deep
And I learned those stories were not right.

Beware of Fairytales my dears
Don't let them pull you in,
And drown you in emotions
When you are yet to learn to swim.

Charming isn't a man
He is simply a disguise,
And underneath you're sure to find
An awful being lies.

Take his Fruit with caution
And refrain from taking a bite,
Don't Poison yourself willingly
Just to be polite.

Look out for the signs dear girl
It's okay to remain
Within the safety of your Castle walls
Staring out from the window pane.

The stories that you hear
As an innocent little girl,
Will make you a naive woman
Who mistakes sand for pearls.

I am not trying to scare you
But I can only speak from my own heartbreak,
Learn to be your own Hero
So that your heart is not something a Villain can so easily take.

It's lovely! I've always thought of how messed up fairytales were. They're full of horrible lies. Great job capturing that!
