Poem -

FIELD GENERAL

Sitting on the bench with tears in my eyes,

Hands on my head, not wanting to cry.

Did I blow it? Cost my team the game?

Needing just one more chance to relinquish my name.

With time running out and down by five,

Our defense gets a stop keeping us alive.

First and ten from the thirty-six,

Time to throw the ball and move the sticks.

With a minute to go, I throw a post.

The defender tipped it; boy that was close!

Next play called, I tuck it and run,

All the way down to the twenty-one!

A few plays later, it’s now third and goal.

I throw a dig route, right in the hole.

Tackled at the five; it’s now fourth down,

One more play to get the touchdown!

Coach calls a timeout to go over the plan,

Telling me, “I have faith in you, Dan.”

Jogging back on the field with all of my guys,

My stomach starts churning with butterflies.

Staring across the line I see,

Eleven large beasts looking back at me.

The whistle blows; the clock starts to whined.

It’s fourth and goal, have to get over that line.

Making my reads, sweat starting to pour,

Two safeties deep, I see cover four.

The perfect play is called; this game is a wrap.

I’m ready to go, it’s time for the snap.

From the bottom of my gut, I yell, “DOWN! SET! GO!”

I take the snap and start the show!

The safety rolls down; it’s now cover three,

My receiver starts to scream, “Hit me! Hit me!”

I feel the rush and step up in the pocket.

My receiver explodes past the safety, like a rocket.

I gather my strength and let the ball fly;

The laces spin and soar in the sky.

The ball is flying and his hands reach out.

It hits him in stride; the crowd starts to shout!

He crosses the line with his hands in the air.

The announcer shouts, “Modelski to Brown, oh, what a pair!”

The clock strikes zero; the game is won!

The battle has ended, over and done.

We won the championship, honest and fair,

Standing together, holding number one in the air!

This is a moment I will never forget,

Winning the game, all the blood and the sweat.

Sharing this moment, with friends and family,

The emotions start to take over me.

Football is more than a game; it’s a way of life,

Wins feel amazing; the losses like a knife.

But one thing is for sure, no doubt in my mind,

Football is the greatest game ever designed!
