FIVE AND DIME STORES

Once considered part of America's rich folklore
The five and dime store is gone and no more
Tootsie Rolls placed in your vision by the shop till
Candy bars in wrappers on the window sill

Under the counter magazines kept out of view
Tobacco in boxes to smoke on or maybe chew
In my mind that is how the shops were to me
All goods served by a shopkeeper of seventy three

I wonder what America was like in those days
When five and dime stores were the latest craze
In the UK we have an equivalent that's for sure
Poundland is the name of this discount store

The five and dime stores will one day return
Shoppers like bargains the economy will learn
Until then I will celebrate America's favourite creation
A once proud store for a once proud nation
