Flight of the Earls

Flight of the Earls

Their voice still calls us 'cross the sea
though bodies do perish the spirit does wander
a want from our exile our isle never lost
O'Neill, O'Donnell, your story remains

Banished to yonder by Tudor ways
imposters aplenty to ravage the spoils
yet luminous spirit thus echoes beyond
O'Neill, O'Donnell, forgotten you're not

Valiant but vanquished in Kinsale you were
your title degraded and kingdom possessed
defiantly seeking the aid of another
O'Neill, O'Donnell, you never returned

On tearful Lough Swilly thus carried by sails
the last of old Gaelic Ireland did go
sons of Brehon your spirit still calls us
O'Neill, O'Donnell, the ember still glows.
