Fragments Of Myths And Legends

Fragments Of Myths And Legends

O these fragments of Myths & Legends appear
To me in dreams! : the Unicorn's pointed horn;
Hades' dark spectres and a myriad fears;
The Sirens singing sweetly in the raging storm;
Luring poor sailors to certain death on the rocks;
The Golden Fleece hanging richly on the vine.
Medusa's hideous face and snake- like locks
That hiss and shriek; the vintage, blood red wine: imbibed
By Dionysus and his wild acolytes;
They dance ecstatically through the night;
The lyre of Orpheus that could sooth all souls;
Winged Pegasus drifting in azure blue skies;
Pan the Piper playing mischievous roles;
Eros and Psyche on their fateful wedding night;
Prometheus' fire that angered the gods,
Yet helped to greatly evolve crude humankind;
Heracles' twelve tasks that defied all the odds;
Oracles that revealed themselves through bright signs
All of these things are still potent with meaning,
We need them now, more than ever, in an age
That has separated reason and feeling.
For Myths and Legends are still able to trace
The light and dark aspects of our existence
Under the stars. They make sense of mysteries.
Whilst bloodless science, is shrouded in silence.
They are most imaginative histories.
