From Where Do Beggars Come?

I have often wondered what it would be like
living as a beggar on the streets.
I see them every day and morbid curiosity
make me slow down and take notice,
when all around me stony-faced people are hurrying away.

They haven’t the time or the inclination
to see how sad and lonely people just fade away,
but it’s a fate that’s awaits the careless and the unwary,
because anyone, yes anyone, can become a victim
of the ‘System’ because, ‘The System’ stinks of respectability.
And there are gaps waiting for the unfortunate to slip through easily.
On this hellish trajectory there’s nothing but misery
and be-it the certainty that no child is safe in the hands of
the privileged predator lording it in High Society.

Even the clergy, yes, even the clergy
are up to their necks in this infamy.
So thus, they have slammed-shut the church doors.
The unfortunate are not welcomed by God any more
Selfishness is the order of the day
I’m alright Jack get out of my way
If you have a problem solve it yourself.
No one will listen, not if you can’t pay.
So, try focusing through your supposed
bumper package of job security, and you’ll see
staring back at you the piercing eyes of poverty,
because, the ‘System’ stinks of respectability.

And at the forefront of this ungodly engine
are the power-crazy Politicians officiating over a justice system
that can be bought and sold to the highest bidder.
And so, they will enact laws that will criminalise the homeless
and victimise the poor.
In their hands, nothing is sacred, nothing is divine.
So at election time when Politicians will come gunning with statistics
You too could end up in a doorway helpless and supine.
So pray tell, are you still wondering where beggars come from?
Are you? Are you? Are you?

Wonderful and heart felt, yet sadly true.
